Quality Improvement

The DNP scholarly project is a deliverable of the accumulation of knowledge and summative evaluation of the DNP education process. The DNP project affords the DNP-candidate the opportunity to bridge the gap between research and clinical practice through quality improvement. DNP essentials I, II, II, IV, V, VI, and VII are integrated into this body of work with the overall goal of improving healthcare delivery and improving patient outcomes.

DNP Project Poster:
Gender-Specific Waist Circumference Measurements in Patients Taking Atypical Antipsychotics

This quality improvement project took place at a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) in southeastern Pennsylvania. The goal was to incorporate waist circumference measurements into clinical practice for patients prescribed atypical antipsychotics.

Evidence demonstrates that atypical antipsychotics cause cardiometabolic side effects that can lead to serious complications such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes,  and stroke. Incorporating waist circumference measurements into clinical practice, per American Diabetes Association and American Psychological practice guidelines, will aid in timely detection and treatment.
