My Story

As a first-generation American woman of Haitian descent

As a first-generation American woman of Haitian descent, my parents ingrained in me the importance of maintaining self-respect, having strong values, and obtaining higher education beyond high school. Growing up I’ve always known that I wanted a career in the medical field, however my direct path didn’t become evident until I was in high school when I got the opportunity to shadow a nurse and a physician in a level one trauma center in Philadelphia. After that experience, there was no doubt in my mind that I wanted to become a registered nurse (RN). I was drawn by the nurse-patient relationship, and I felt that I could make the greatest impact in the lives of patients during their most vulnerable moments. After obtaining my Bachelor of Science in nursing (BSN) degree from Temple University in 2010 and obtaining my RN license, I began my career at the same level one trauma center that is now an instrumental part of my journey and who I am as a nurse. My passion for community health, disease prevention, and health promotion led to the decision to leave the bedside in December of 2015 to work in home health. As a home health nurse working with vulnerable adults and older adults in West Philadelphia, I’ve been able to directly impact patient outcomes and prevent rehospitalizations through health education and collaboration with inpatient and outpatient providers. My experience as a home health nurse and my desire to impact patient outcomes in a different capacity led me to further my education to become a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP)-prepared nurse practitioner. As a future Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner, I will have a direct influence on reducing health disparities for vulnerable populations through assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and management of acute and chronic health conditions. My DNP education will further allow me to strengthen my practice and health care delivery in today’s complex and multi-layered health care environment. In addition to my clinical practice, my goal is to enter the world of academia teaching undergraduate nursing students. Obtaining my teaching in higher education certificate in May of 2020 allowed me to develop my teaching skills and it demonstrates my commitment to enhance the learning of future nursing students.
